PITCH YOUR STORY BY JUNE 7, 2020

We are seeking contributors for CreatedHere Magazine Issue 13: working art, launching September 2020.

Art has an optics problem. By some it is seen as a luxury with poor career prospects, while others believe that talented artists are gifted with their skills. Like you, we know better. Art = practice and technical development. Art = time (so much time). Art = work: integral, valid and viable work.

When so many are turning to art to stay sane in isolation, it is the optimal time to explore the value and station of the artist in our society. This is the moment to celebrate our role model entrepreneurs, our patient and hardworking craftspeople, our combined achievements for economic security. Within hardship, we can inspire one another to innovate, adapt, and even thrive.

We are seeking:

  • visual explorations of slow or labour-intensive processes

  • how artistic businesses can adapt to adverse conditions

  • unlikely avenues for artistic income, and grant-funded projects

  • research-backed findings on the economic impact of art & craft

  • making a living: creative entrepreneurs in action

We are open to any and all ideas that creatively fit this theme. You do not need to be an experienced writer, and you can choose to suggest a story for our staff writers. Anyone may submit – all mediums, genders, cultures, identities.

Your initial pitch should be short and sweet. Please read the submission instructions on our website to ensure you send everything we need to consider your work.

Through the generous support of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation, we are offering increased payment this year for writers and artists ($100-$250 depending on contribution size).

This issue is inspired by Art=Work, a term created by the Mary MacDonald Foundation. To learn more about the Foundation, including links to purchase Art=Work t-shirts offered in collaboration with VANL-CARFAC, click here.
